Scientists have looked at nature for a long time to get ideas for projects like this. Robert Full, an integrative biologist at the University of California, used cockroaches as inspiration for the robot's design because of the cockroach’s capabilities. Scientists have made a Robo-Roach that can run past objects, disappear in a blink of the eye, and fit into a tight space is by splitting their legs apart. When they do this, they compress their exoskeleton and make themselves two times smaller than their current size. Cockroaches can also move 23 inches a second. After running experiments on a cockroach's ability to compress themselves, scientists have found out that the cockroach can withstand forces that are 900 times their weight, and so scientists have realized that if they mimic the cockroaches exoskeleton they could make the Robo-Roach hold up debris for the victims.
Because insects have unique abilities, scientists have made robots that mimic them. The capabilities of these robo-roaches are very high, so they could be used to save people.
