Black holes have the ability to power the world! Stephen Hawking has been researching ways to harness the energy of black holes after being questioned in a lecture about black holes being undetectable.
Black holes are created after a star collapses into itself when the nuclear fuel is exhausted. After extensive research, Hawking discovered that a black hole with the mass of a mountain emitted gamma-rays and X-rays. What stumped him was how to harness the power. After looking more into the topic, he discovered a black hole couldn't be held in a power station because it would sink through to the earth's core. "People have searched for mini black holes of this mass but have so far not found any," said Hawking.
Hawking explained that as particles fall into black holes, they “are constantly materializing in pairs, separating, and then coming together again and annihilating each other.” They were so small, they couldn't be detected with a particle detector. They are only detected when they shift, which is called the Lamb Shift. This shift gives them the ability to give off energy. We can't detect larger black holes the size of the sun, because they let out energy at a slower rate, so we have to find mountain sized black holes that emit 10 million megawatts at a faster rate.
Now that a solution for cleanly energizing the world has come, all that we need now is the black hole. This could change the way the world uses energy for the better and get us one step closer to a cleaner free world.
