Up until George Devol invented the first robot in 1954, people used to do things for themselves. A robot is anything that can perform a task for you.
Think about it, in day-to-day life you probably interact with a robot everyday. There are many different types of robots, and they are everywhere. Most people think of robots as things that are controlled with a controller, which isn't true at all. Cars, coffee makers, and phones are all robots. A vending machine can also be considered a robot, but it needs input in order to complete a task.
Robots can be programmed to do almost anything, but they they are prone to failure. Unlike humans, they don't have the ability to troubleshoot, so humans have to go back and fix the issue for them. Even with all the advancements in technology they still fail, but not for the reasons you think. Most people don't know how computers work and they even make the computer fail. For instance they can’t tell what a virus on a system is. Most people would often blame the system.
iPhones are definitely a robot that completes so many tasks that you probably couldn't name all of them. My phone has Siri, which is definitely another type of robot. Even though it's not a physical robot that can move around, it often finds info or opens apps when needed. It's important to remember that robots aren't always giant machines or weapons of mass destruction.
In this day-and-age, robots almost run or are involved in everything we do, even eating, sleeping, and walking. They might seem normal now, but we might not always have their help. Maybe you should try going a day without interacting with a robot and you just might see how many there actually are.
